Japanese Box Office Ranks, October 3-4

The third film in Yukihiko Tsutsumi's three-part live-action adaptation of Naoki Urasawa's 20th Century Boys manga remained at the top spot on Kogyo Tsushinsha's Japanese box office chart during the October 3-4 weekend. According to Box Office Mojo, it earned the equivalent of US$925,793 on 322 screens. After its sixth weekend, it has a gross-to-date of US$45,425,281.
Yōichi Sai's (Choi Yang-il's) live-action film adaptation of Sanpei Shirato's Kamui Gaiden ninja manga rose from #3 to #2 in its third weekend on Kogyo Tsushinsha's chart, although Box Office Mojolists it as #3 still. Ken'ichi Matsuyama (Death Notemovies' L, Detroit Metal City's Sōichi/Krauser II) stars in the title role of a rogue ninja on the run from his own clan. The film garnered US$818,903 on 308 screens to add to its total of US$9,022,121.
Takashi Yamazaki's live-action Ballad: Namonaki Koi no Uta period drama film traded spaces withKamui Gaiden as it dropped to #3 in its fifth weekend. It added US$851,408 on 331 screens for a total of US$17,328,309. Tsuyoshi Kusanagi of the SMAP entertainment group stars in this historical romance based loosely on the plot of the award-winning Crayon Shin-chan: Arashi wo Yobu Appare! Sengoku Daikassen film.
Duel Masters: Lunatic God Saga and Penguin no Mondai: Shiawase no Aoi Tori de Go-Pen-nasaistayed at #4 on Kogyo Tsushinsha's chart, although it fell to #7 on Box Office Mojo's chart. In its third weekend, TOHO's double feature took in US$413,774 on 308 screens for a gross-to-date of US$6,662,257. The two films are based on Shogakukan's Duel Masters and A Penguin's Troubles(Penguin no Mondai) television anime series.
The Tales of Vesperia ~The First Strike~ anime film opened at #7 on on Kogyo Tsushinsha's chart. Kanta Kamei (Digimon: Diaboromon Strikes Back animation director, Kill Bill Chapter 3: The Origin of O-Ren visual supervisor) directed Production I.G's theatrical adaptation of NAMCO's Tales of Vesperia role-playing game for the Xbox 360 console.
